How to pin products at the top of a Shopify collection

Updated October 10, 2026

Automatic sorting is great until you need a product at the top for a campaign, a launch or a partner. With Shopify's manual sort you can drag it there, but any automatic re-sort moves it away. This guide shows the two ways MDPositions keeps chosen products at the top while sorting the rest.

OrderLocked positions → Pinned products → rest sorted by criteria

Option 1: pinned products

In a sort, add products under Pinned products. They are placed at the top of every collection covered by the sort, in the order you choose, before the products sorted by criteria.

Use it for a campaign, a launch or a hero product. Remove the pin when the campaign ends; the product goes back to its place in the automatic order at the next run.

Option 2: locked positions

Locked positions keeps the first N products of each collection exactly where they are. Set it to 3, arrange the first three products by hand in Shopify, and MDPositions will only sort from the fourth position on.

Use it when the top of a collection is curated by hand and you only want to automate the rest.

How they fit together

For each collection, MDPositions builds the order in this sequence:

  • Locked positions, untouched.
  • Pinned products, in your order.
  • Products of boosted vendors (Pro), sorted by your criteria.
  • All other products, sorted by your criteria.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan do I need?

Pinned products and locked positions need the Starter plan, with up to 5 pinned products per sort, or Pro for unlimited pinned products.

What happens if a pinned product is not in a collection?

It is simply ignored for that collection. Pins only apply to the collections that contain the product.

In what order are pinned products shown?

In the order you set in the list of pinned products.
