How the score is calculated
For each criterion, MDPositions reads a value for every product of the collection, for example its number of recent orders. Values are scaled between 0 (lowest in the collection) and 1 (highest), so criteria with very different units become comparable.
Each scaled value is multiplied by the criterion's weight, from 1 to 10, and the results are added up. Products are then sorted by total score, highest first. The direction of a criterion (ascending or descending) decides whether low or high values score best.
Start from the Smart merchandising preset
The Smart merchandising preset is a balanced starting point:
- Stock Availability, weight 7: sold-out products go down.
- Recent Sales over 30 days, weight 5: what sells now goes up.
- Creation Date, weight 2: new products get a small boost so they are seen.
Adjust the weights to your goal
- Clearing stock: add Inventory Quantity, descending, so products with the most units come first.
- Protecting margin: add Profit Margin with a moderate weight, so between two similar products the more profitable one comes first.
- Discovery: add Random with a low weight to vary the order between runs.
Keep control
Use Locked positions to keep the first slots of a collection unchanged, and Pinned products to always show specific products first. The criteria only order the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How many criteria can I combine?
Up to 3 on the Free plan, 8 on Starter and all 15 on Pro.
Does a weight of 10 mean 10 times more important than 1?
Roughly, yes. Each criterion gives a score between 0 and 1, multiplied by its weight, and the scores are added up. A criterion with weight 10 can move a product ten times more than one with weight 1.
Can I check the result before applying it?
Yes. The Preview button shows the new order of a collection before anything is written to Shopify.
