How to boost products with a specific tag in Shopify collections

Updated October 10, 2026

Tags are the most flexible way to mark products in Shopify: featured, eco-friendly, made in France, gift idea. MDPositions can use a tag as a sorting criterion, so tagged products move up in every collection. Combined with automatic tagging, your collections reorganize themselves.

SortTag Match (featured), weight 8 + Recent Sales 5

Set up a tag-based sort

Create a sort and add the Tag Match criterion:

  • Expected tag: choose a tag from your catalog, for example featured.
  • Weight: 8, so tagged products clearly move up.
  • Add Recent Sales with weight 5 to rank tagged products between themselves, and the others too.

Same idea with product types

Product Type Match works the same way with the Shopify product type. Use it to push one type forward in mixed collections, for example Gift sets during the holidays.

Fully automatic with MDTagPilot

Tags are only useful if they are up to date. With MDTagPilot, tags follow your data:

  • MDTagPilot tags products on sale with promo; MDPositions boosts the promo tag in every collection during the sale.
  • MDTagPilot tags low-stock products; MDPositions moves them up to clear them, or down to avoid disappointing shoppers.
  • MDTagPilot tags new arrivals for 30 days; MDPositions gives them a boost while they are new.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan do I need?

Tag Match and Product Type Match need the Starter plan or higher.

Is the tag match case-sensitive?

The tag must match exactly as written in Shopify. Pick it from the list of your existing tags to avoid typos.

How do I tag products automatically?

MDTagPilot, by the same publisher, adds and removes tags from rules: best sellers, products on sale, low stock, new arrivals. MDPositions then uses these tags to order your collections.
